If you set your children up for success when they’re young, it will help keep them on track when they’re adults. Here’s your action plan for reaching your family fitness goals. Added bonus: You’ll up your own fitness level too!

When it comes to physical fitness, parents can positively encourage their children to be active by being active themselves. Children’s behaviors are essentially modeled from our own. I think the same applies when it comes to our body image too. Our kids don’t see us the way we see ourselves. They don’t notice the cellulite or lumps and bumps. Children see their parents as love and perfection personified. If you start making negative statements about your body, kids can start picking up on it and in turn, start feeling insecure about themselves.

Getting fit as a family does not have to be very time-consuming or complex; it can be fun and creative.

Allocate Time for Family Exercise Every Day. Go for pre- or post-dinner walks or make a game of household chores. Pretend that dust creatures are invading earth and it’s up to Captain [insert child’s name] to save the day by capturing them with his broom.

Have a Weekly Sports Night or Run and Walk For Charity.

Turn TV commercials into fitness breaks.  Invent silly names for simple exercises like squats, push-ups, and sit-ups, and then do them together till the show comes back on.

Make an Exercise Video. Have your family create their own exercise video where your kids are the stars and have fun exercising along with the video over and over again.

Dancing Can Be Fun. Just dance, have a super-fun, spirit-lifting family time and burn calories at the same time.

Going the Extra Step. Parking farther away when running errands with the kids, encouraging them to take the stairs with you when shopping, and having them walk along the cart can increase their activity.

Blend Technology With Play. Play Your Cards Right. Create your own Family Olympics. Go to your local track or town pool and have races while your family goes for the gold!

Plan an Active Holiday that includes trekking, swimming, walking and so on.  Kids will love it and so will you.

By setting the basic foundations of life, parents are the number one source affecting the way children feel about living a healthy lifestyle. Children innately realize that Mom and Dad are their educators, mentors, heroes, supporters, and role models throughout their lives.
