Being physically active and focusing on fitness is an important life priority beginning in early childhood to build healthy habits. Not only does regular exercise and physical activity increase physical and cardiovascular health, it can improve sleep, reduce stress, increase attention and learning, and minimize illness. Because the habits and preferences children develop early in life will shape their choices and behaviors for years to come, it is critical to establish good physical activity habits now.
Rethink your idea of exercise. A workout doesn’t have to mean running laps or lifting weights, which requires you to set aside blocks of time. Think of exercise as leading an active lifestyle, which you can do with your kids, and you’ll be able to fit in more than you think.
As a bonus, exercise with family does double duty as quality time — no small consideration given our jam-packed schedules. It is also a magnificent way to build stronger family bonds. Turn every day into an opportunity to get fit — and have fun — together.
Make Time to Play
Set aside 30 minutes three times a week to do fun exercises with your kids. Make it a part of your after-school or after-dinner routine. If your kids are young, they might enjoy hopscotch or hide-and-seek. Kick a soccer ball around with older children. Plan one family outing every weekend.
Walk or Bicycle Everywhere You Can
Use muscle power: Bike or walk to the grocery store, library, or to your child’s school or sports events. Go for a 30-minute family walk after dinner instead of heading right for the television
Plan Active Family Gatherings
Serve up family fitness as well as cake at your child’s birthday party by planning active games such as tag or relay races. Older kids might enjoy throwing a dance party. Organise team games for older kids.
Sing and Dance While You Clean
Set aside time for household chores and do them together as a family. Play music as you clean, and take turns choosing favorite songs. Younger children love to help out and can pick up toys or sweep floors while dancing with the broom. Older kids can dust, vacuum, and help make beds.
Make Yard Work Less of a Chore for More Family Exercise
Enjoy seasonal yard work together. Younger children can help plant and tend a garden. Older kids can rake leaves into a pile — and then jump in it. Make snow shoveling fun for all by building a snow fort or creating a family of snow people.
Shop Together and Cook Healthy Meals Together
Teach your children to make healthy choices at the supermarket while doing your weekly or monthly shopping. Encourage them to help you in the kitchen to make appetising, low calorie, healthy meals together.
It’s fun to do activities together and what better than keeping fit together.
