Queen Callie: A Little Queen Who Ruled Our Hearts

She came into our lives unexpectedly one late evening in February 2013, during one of my visits to India.

And somehow, from that very first night, we all fell in love with her.

Callie was adorable, feisty and determined. She seemed to have decided that she belonged with us, long before we realised that we had become her family.

She had her own little routine. She would wait until the entire household was asleep before quietly sneaking into my room and snuggling close to me. At dawn, she would disappear without a sound, leaving no trace that she had spent the night there. No one knew she had been sleeping in my room.

We began leaving food out for her, but noticed that she would eat only half of it. It was only later that we discovered the reason — she had a sybling, and she was saving food to share.

Those early years were filled with laughter, fun and the joy of discovering each other.

Callie loved corn. The moment she knew corn was being prepared, she would make a beeline for the kitchen counter and wait impatiently for her share.

She also loved gospel music. Every night, she would join my Mum and sisters during their prayers, quietly becoming part of our family’s evening routine.

Oh, how we loved her!

For 13 wonderful years, she was our spoiled and much-petted darling — our beautiful Calico cat, affectionately known as Callie Mummy.

And then, when the time came for us to say goodbye, it happened so suddenly.

She left us at dusk, quietly and without any fuss — almost exactly as unexpectedly as she had entered our lives all those years ago.

But this time, she left behind a family devastated by her loss.

Callie gave us 13 years of companionship, laughter, affection and countless precious memories. She also gave us her beautiful kittens, who are still with us and remain a living part of her story.

We are grateful for every moment we had with her, for the love she gave us, and for the little queen who chose our family as her home.

The Queen is gone.

But she will reign in our hearts forever!

Callico’s Corn

For tender, juicy corn on the cob:

Stovetop

Bring a large pot of water to a full boil.

Add the corn.

Cover and boil for 5–7 minutes for fresh, tender corn.

If the corn is older or a little tough, give it 8–10 minutes.

Drain and serve immediately.

Tip: You don’t need to boil it for 15–20 minutes—fresh sweet corn cooks quite quickly.

Pressure Cooker

Add about 250–300 ml water to the cooker and place the corn on a trivet.

High pressure: 2 minutes → tender and juicy

3 minutes → very tenderLet the pressure release naturally for about 5 minutes, then release the remaining pressure.

For the lovely bright yellow corn in the picture, 2 minutes at high pressure should be plenty.
