How To Clean Crabs

How To Clean Crabs
I remember when my Mum decided that her children had to learn how to clean crabs. Our first re-action was Yuk, Eew, Ugh and other teenage expressions that we thought would get us off the hook. We sulked, we complained, we jeered (at her), we groused to no avail. We gave in when she declared “No pocket money!”
Our Mum was determined to make responsible citizens of her brood even though it meant that we had to learn how to clean crabs. That was many, many years ago. And I am proud to say that all four of us wield an expert hand in each of our respective kitchens. My daughters are the same and it thrills me to know that I have passed on a useful life skill that will be passed on to the next generation. Learning never dies. It goes on and on and on. From one generation to the next. Learn how to clean crabs! ( LOL).
Over the years, we have eaten so many crabs ( no threat to the aquarian population) and loved being able to cook a variety of recipes. Mangalorean Curried Crabs, Mangalorean Crab Sukka, Mangalorean Crabs Mummy Style, Malaysian Butter Crabs, Singapore Crabs, Chilli Crabs, Crab Meat Soup, Ginger Crabs, Garlic Crabs and even Fried Crabs. You name it, we have either made it or eaten it on our numerous travels. And all because our Mum made it a point to teach us how to clean crabs.
In fact at the super market, the servers are quite surprised that I never ask for the crabs to be cleaned. They stare at me in astonishment and that starts a conversation. So now most of them know that I know how to clean crabs because my Mum insisted that I learn how to clean crabs as a teenager. It’s quite hilarious because they don’t expect someone who looks the way I do to be able to clean crabs.
At one restaurant that we used to frequent, the owner told me “Ha! What do you know about cooking? You are the type who doesn’t step into a kitchen. Probably have a cook to do everything!” He was totally embarrassed when I showed him photos of my cooking classes. I must say I enjoyed that.
To cut a long story short. I am glad I learned how to clean crabs!
