One Malaysian tradition that fascinated me was the Yee Sang  or Prosperity Toss Salad made during Chinese New Year every year. It was an explosion of tastes and colour and goodwill and everything positive.  I loved watching people mix and toss the salad chanting various sayings to promote prosperity, health, wealth, happiness and so on.  Chinese New Year is celebrated by Chinese all over the world, and while it has its roots in Chinese culture, the prosperity toss or Yee Sang is something that is uniquely Malaysian.

Yee Sang  is a type of salad that is traditionally prepared with raw fish, carrots, daikon, cucumber, pickled ginger, pomelo, peanuts, sesame seeds, pillow crackers, five spice powder, pepper, oil and plum sauce. Every ingredient represents something or the other. I am not a fan of raw fish, so I decided to search for a totally vegetarian Yee Sang and I came across many versions of it.  It can be made with fruits, vegetables, nuts or whatever you fancy as long as it looks good and tastes awesome.

Over the past few years, I have made various Yee Sang Salads depending on the year. Thanks to a husband who draws well, I just have to request him to do an outline for me which I then copy on to rice paper using edible ink and then proceed to make the salad.  This year being the year of the Rabbit, it was pretty easy. I used very few ingredients and anyone can make this easily.  It’s fun and a great way to interact while entertaining at the same time.

So Gong Xi Fa Cai and welcome to The Year Of The Rabbit.

The Recipe:

The Ingredients:

Baking paper to draw outline

Rice Paper

200 gms grated carrot

300 gms grated white radish

50 gms chopped coriander leaves

1 large red chilli sliced diagnolly

50 gms Crystalized ginger, diced

Method:

Draw the outline of a rabbit on baking paper. Place the rice paper on it and using edible ink trace the outline on the rice paper.  This makes it easier to get the shape right. It’s my method for making different shapes over the years. Next fill in the rabbit with the grated white radish.  Do not be in a hurry and make sure you have plenty of place to work efficiently.  Next fill in the outside with the grated carrots, sliced red chillies, chopped coriander and diced ginger.  Use tweezers or a knife to get the perfect outline and shape.  Arrange on table, take photos, toss and serve with plum sauce.

Doesn’t it look pretty?

Here’s another Yee Sang for you to make when the year is appropriate
