Pomegranate Liqueur For Christmas

My journey into the world of liqueur began many years ago when my sister gave me some home made coffee liqueur.  It was delicious and she parted with the recipe with firm instructions to never share it with anyone.  I have kept my promise and started researching into the fascinating art of homemade liqueurs.  What I discovered enthralled me and as I delved further, I realised that I could make it myself with minimum effort and time.  Since then I have made a different liqueur every year at Christmas.  I have used fruits, herbs, nuts, rose petals and a combination of ingredients.  This year it was some luscious , ruby red pomegranates that caught my eye.  The result was a beautiful dark red and as it mellowed in time for Christmas, it became a dark orangish golden hue. The taste was just right and I have hidden my Pomegranate Liqueur in my cupboard for obvious reasons.

Liqueurs have a rich and fascinating history, with origins dating back to the Middle Ages in the 13th century in Italy.  Monks were often the ones who crafted these drinks, using them as herbal remedies.  In fact, liqueurs were originally known as “cordials” because they were believed to have medicinal properties. They have been called balms, crèmes, elixirs, and oils and have been used over the centuries as medicines and tonics, love potions, and aphrodisiacs. It wasn’t until later that they became popular as a recreational beverage.  Over time, the popularity of liqueurs spread throughout Europe and beyond. Many different countries developed their own unique varieties, each with its own distinct flavour and character. Liqueurs are very easy to make at home, no special equipment required! The word liqueur is derived from the Latin liquefacere, meaning “to make liquid.”  Liqueur is a type of alcoholic beverage that has been enjoyed for centuries. It is made by combining distilled spirits with various flavourings such as sugar, fruits, herbs, and spices.

The recipe is perfect for Christmas, especially when one is running short of time.
