February 14 is the day when people exchange cards, chocolate or flowers with their special “valentine.” St. Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia. This is the day when people show their affection for other persons by sending cards, flowers or chocolates with messages of love. The day is named after a saint believed to be a priest from Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown into jail and sentenced to death where he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and when taken to be executed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine. As part of the Lupercalia celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They were paired during the festival and sometimes got married. Later on, the church turned this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine too. Over the years, St Valentine’s name started to be used by people to express their feelings to those they loved. For more information visit http:// www.bbc.co.uk
