Sooji Ladoo

Sooji Ladoo

A melt in the mouth recipe is the Sooji Ladoo/Rava Ladoo my Mum used to make every Christmas. Each year, my Mum would make a whole lot of traditional eats. Most of it would be given away. We would joyously help her to make these treats and learnt how to make them in the process. These Sooji Ladoos/ Rava Ladoos are delicate, fragile things. They have to be handled very carefully. Too much of pressure makes them collapse and one has to have the right technique to roll them into round, shapely balls studded with nuts and raisins.  Loaded with calories and too scrumptious to be passed over, it is one treat we indulge in every year.

I remember one year, on one of my yearly visits to Bangalore, we all sat around the table and made Sooji Ladoos to take back to Kuala Lumpur with us.  This was long before food items were prohibited in hand luggage. My Mum neatly packed it in a steel container and gave it to me.  I carried it in my hand luggage ever so carefully. Wonders of wonders, they reached intact and we all enjoyed them at Christmas. These Sooji Ladoos are like none other. I have never eaten any other Sooji Ladoo as good as these. All it needs is a bit of patience and the confidence that all will go well.

Add the cardamom powder and mix well with a wooden spatula. Throw in the raisins and nuts. Mix thoroughly again. If too dry add more ghee. Gently form into ladoos and store in an air tight container. Serve on Christmas Day and expect your guests to ask for more.
