Khoshaf, Sweet Comfort in a Glass
Some recipes arrive just when you need them most.
During the pandemic, when life felt uncertain and a bit heavy, a dear friend sent me a recipe that brought comfort in the sweetest way — Khoshaf, a traditional Middle Eastern dried fruit compote.
The first time I made it, I was hooked. No stove, no fuss, just simple soaking and a bit of waiting.
Since then, I’ve made it all through the year — for myself, for my family, and for guests who drop by. Everyone loves it.
And honestly, what’s not to love? I adore dried fruits and I adore desserts. Khoshaf combines both into something refreshing, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a treat.
Khoshaf is especially popular during Ramadan (or Ramzan, as we say in India), when it’s often served to break the fast. But for me, it’s become an anytime treat — especially on warm days when something cool and naturally sweet hits the spot.
This lovely recipe originally comes from Amira’s Pantry, and I’m so grateful for it. Thank you, Amira, for sharing something that has now become a little tradition in my home.
The Recipe:
Ingredients (for one serving):
2 dates
2 prunes
2 dried figs
2 dried apricots
1 tablespoon raisins
1 piece fruit mat (torn into small pieces)
2 almonds
2 cashews
1 cup water
A few drops of vanilla essence
Method:
Tear or chop all the dried fruits into bite-sized pieces.
Add everything into a bowl or jar.
Pour in the water and add a few drops of vanilla essence.
Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Serve chilled — enjoy it as a refreshing drink or spoon it up like dessert!
It’s as simple as that. No cooking, just soaking — and the result is a glass full of flavour, texture, and a bit of joy.
Every time I make Khoshaf, it feels like a small celebration — a glass full of comfort, sweetness, and memories of sharing recipes with friends.
This is a video that I made during the Pandemic which is slightly different from the recipe above.
