I came across Chaat relatively late in life- only after I got married because my husband was a fan of Indian Street Food. Until then I had never heard of it, leave alone ventured out to eat it. Anything with a combination of sweet and sour flavours in one dish can be called a chaat. Fruit chaats are a unique recipe from India and there are numerous versions of it. Usually fruits are eaten with sugar or a syrup or with ice cream and so on, but a Fruit Chat is an extraordinary combination of fruits and many different flavours ranging from spicy to sweet to sour and more.

Guava Fruit Chat is spicy and tangy and has a blend of spices known as chaat masala which varies from household to household. All are delicious and I just love making it as a healthy treat for my family. This recipe was sent by my good friend Rose and I changed it to suit the ingredients available in my kitchen.

The Recipe:

1 large ripe guava, remove seeds and cube ( 250 gms); 1 cup curds; salt to taste; juice of 1/2 lime

Chat Masala: 1/4 tsp jeera powder/cumin seed powder; 1/2 tsp black salt/any salt to taste; 1/4 tsp chilli powder; 1/2 tsp brown sugar; a pinch of pepper

Mix together and keep till required.

Whisk curds and Chat Masala together, reserving a pinch for garnishing later. Gently fold in the guava cubes. Scatter a pinch of the Chat Masala on top and serve cold garnished with a few coriander leaves. Can be served as a healthy snack or as a side dish for lunch or dinner.
